A new 9,000-square-foot food hall is planned for Mirvish Village in Toronto, bringing 12 restaurant vendors together in a two-level space where orders from different kitchens will be delivered to diners by conveyor belt.
Called The Kitchen, the food hall is expected to open early next year.
The venue will offer communal seating for 460 guests indoors, with room for another 100 outdoors during warmer months. The project is designed to serve as both a dining destination and a neighbourhood gathering place.
Grant Nelson, director of food and beverage operations, said the concept was built around the challenge of choosing one restaurant that satisfies everyone.
“The Kitchen was designed around a moment every group knows well: no one can agree on where to eat,” Nelson told Toronto Life. He said the goal is to create a neighborhood space where visitors can order from different kitchens, eat together and stay awhile.
The 12 kitchens will feature a mix of local restaurant favourites and new concepts, although the individual vendors have not yet been announced. Planned food categories include Latin American, Korean, Japanese and Middle Eastern cuisine, along with burgers and fried chicken, according to Toronto Life.
The ordering system will allow customers to combine dishes from multiple vendors in one order, either at a kiosk or through an app.
Rather than collecting each item from a separate counter, guests will receive their food together via a conveyor belt that runs past the kitchens and delivers orders to individual pickup cubbies. The setup is intended to make group dining easier, particularly when guests want food from different restaurants.
