Red Koi, the Japanese restaurant at Poplar Avenue and I-240, is planning to move to East Buntyn at 431 S. Highland St.

The restaurant plans to renovate a vacant space adjacent to Char Restaurant, costing around $300,000, according to an application filed recently with Traditional Construction Co. on behalf of the ownership, first reported by the Daily Memphian. Red Koi Japanese Cuisine, currently located at 5847 Poplar Avenue in the Ridgeway Trace Center, first opened in 2012. Owner Lienda Rader will move the restaurant near the University of Memphis likely by the end of the year.

The restaurant offers various Japanese cuisines, such as sushi, sashimi, nigiri, hibachi, and other Japanese classics, including Bento boxes, Tempura, and more. Restaurant Guru has rated Red Koi as one of the best takeaway food spots in Memphis twice, while Nextdoor voted the restaurant as a neighborhood favorite in 2019 and 2020. Other businesses in the Highland Strip include Hot Worx, Smoothie King, and Gloss Nail Bar.

“If you’re on the hunt for authentic Japanese food, your search is over,” according to the company’s website. “Red Koi Japanese Cuisine is your destination when you want to experience the flavors of the Orient and sample flavorful Japanese cuisine right here in Memphis. We offer a wide range of lunch and dinner items that are sure to satisfy any palate. Our food is cooked to order using only the freshest ingredients. When you dine with us, we’ll treat you like family.”
