Sweetgreen, the hottest destination for simple, seasonal, healthy food, is expanding to downtown Evanston, located at 1601 Sherman Ave.

The new location will sit in the former home of World of Beer, which then became Evanston Pub. This Sweetgreen will be one of the first tenants in the newly renovated Fountain Square Building. The chain was founded in 2007 by Georgetown University graduates Nicolas Jammet, Nathaniel Ru, and Jonathan Neman. The trio has expanded to over 120 locations across the United States, with several already in Chicago. Now, the new downtown Evanston location will likely open in Spring or Summer 2022.

Sweetgreen is quickly becoming a go-to destination for health-forward individuals. All of their food is fresh, plant-forward, and earth-friendly, proving fast-casual restaurants are focusing on bettering the planet moving forward. Some popular menu items include kale caesar salad, buffalo chicken bowl, chicken pesto parm, and rosemary focaccia. On top of that, the company has committed to becoming completely carbon neutral by 2027.

“We think about Sweetgreen in 30 years, and our ability as a country to grow food, and how climate change might affect our business,” Jammet said last year in a tweet. “And if we actually want our business to be successful—I’m talking about putting my capitalism hat on here—in the long term, we just think this is the right thing to do. In general, it’s this mentality around what’s good for the planet and good for business doesn’t have to be mutually exclusive. There’s a business case for this.”
