A local pizzeria that shut its doors last summer is gearing up for a triumphant return to the Monroe food market.
Giuseppe’s Pizza has signed a three-year lease agreement for 1,840 square feet of retail space at the South Monroe Plaza, according to Monroe County business filings.
The restaurant is the province of owners Tony and Stephanie Cusumano. The couple is back in the kitchen working to resurrect their brand of hand-tossed pizzas, meatball subs, mostaccioli, gnocchi and other authentic Italian dishes.
Giuseppe’s revealed the plans to their Facebook followers in January, announcing that they’ve secured a new location at 15219 S. Dixie Highway with intentions to re-open later this year.
“While we wanted to build a new pizzeria, market conditions and delayed construction timelines hindered those efforts temporarily,” the post stated. “Tony, Stephanie and the whole GP’s work family are excited to be back in business soon and can’t wait to share progress posts.”
Giuseppe’s is a family business rooted in the Sicilian heritage of Tony’s parents, Joe and Joann. They laid the foundation nearly 20 years ago when they opened the original pizza shop.
Tony and Stephanie decided to close that location last June, but they did so with their sights set on re-opening this year at a new location that would boast an expanded menu.
The new spot is situated next door to the shuttered Dominic’s Italian restaurant. There’s not yet a timetable on when it will open its doors, owners said this week. The aim is a June launch, according to Giuseppe’s social media pages.
