The Mediterranean and Middle Eastern concept has seen much growth in the last 10 years.
The Halal Shack is again looking at college towns to set up shop in, this time at 530 S State Street in Ann Arbor at the University of Michigan Union basement. This will be the company’s second location in the state, the first being at Oakland University. A winter 2027 opening date is anticipated right now.
First debuting in 2017, Halal Shack opened at owner Jamal Rasoully’s own alma mater, University of Albany. Since then, he has found around 35 locations across the U.S. for his concept, mostly on college campuses. After the closure of the Subway in the basement, the team at Halal Shack saw a new opportunity for a storefront.
“At The Halal Shack, our food is Made with Love. Our culture is rooted in Middle Eastern & Mediterranean heritage which embodies bonds that are created through sharing food Made With Love,” says the description on their website.
Options range from loaded rice bowls to pita wraps, with flavors like hot bbq chicken, falafel, hummus and mint cucumber yogurt. Their items are customizable, even the “naanadilla” which is a Mediterranean twist on a quesadilla. Menus are the same at each location.
The building is easily accessible to many students, at the corner of E Madison and S State streets. This space also houses a QDOBA, Sweetwaters Coffee & Tea and Wing Snob. It is right across the street from the University of Michigan Museum of Art.
