Vecino to Bring Authentic Mexican Fare to Detroit This Fall

Detroit’s historic Midtown is about to be swept off its feet as the new Mexican restaurant Vecino announces its anticipated opening for this November.

The first project from design firm Midwest Common, Vecino, whose name means “neighbor” in Spanish, will turn a historic brick building located on 3rd Street into a culinary haven showcasing Mexico City and Oaxaca traditions right in the heart of Detroit.

The restaurant has a promising founding team. Adriana Jimenez, a native of Mexico City, marries her lifetime experience of working at her family’s two Mexican restaurants with her real estate experience. Colin Tury and Michael Haener, co-founders of Midwest Common, are the masterminds behind the upcoming restaurant’s atmospheric architecture and furniture design.

Situated in Detroit’s historic Midtown, Vecino’s interior captures its menu’s Latino and Italian essence featuring warm textures and materials reframing the original brick and wood trusses. For an additional layer of sophistication and organicity, Spanish moss art features will hang throughout the ceiling in the dining room.

“We fell in love with the elevated and complex take on Mexican cuisine in the restaurants and street carts of Mexico City, and know that Detroit will love this food too,” Haener told What Now Detroit.

Vecino’s interior matches its intricate and elevated menu, which will feature traditional Oaxaca dishes with an inventive twist inspired by Mexico City’s dining scene. Many Vecino plates will utilize a wood-fired hearth at the center of the kitchen.

“Vecino will be a polished casual restaurant with a focus on great food and great hospitality,” Haener said. “The menu will utilize as many high quality local and seasonal ingredients as possible while celebrating the rich flavors and spices of Mexico.”

Vecino is expected to open late November at 4100 3rd Street.
