Trybal, a speakeasy celebrating African culture , is set to add a unique touch to the heart of downtown Denver. Located at 1670 Champa Street, the business is in its final stages of construction and the opening is pending licensing, the owner tells What Now Denver.
Founded by Jeff Sankeu and Collantine Nkaum, the venue will be 1,900 square feet and have rotating art that pays homage to African creatives. Its website shows it will have a knowledge-based entry system, where guests get a QR code after learning some quick facts about the culture.
“The idea is for people to become more knowledgeable about Africa as they come here,” said Sankeu.”We want everyone to feel welcome and experience the richness of Africa, from the food to the music to the art.
The menu at Trybal will be a fusion of African-inspired dishes and specialty cocktails made with juices sourced from different countries in Africa. Sankeu said they just wrapped up creating the menu and have hired a general manager.
Originally from Cameroon, the owners have always been passionate about sharing his heritage. They host afro-beats dance party pop-ups through event company Scatta (which can be read about here) and are also looking for a permanent venue for that concept.
