Middle West Spirits, a Columbus-based distilling brand known for its grain-to-glass operations, has acquired Fort Collins-based Old Elk Distillery and its assets. PR Newswire reported on the recent acquisition, which led to a supposedly temporary closure of its downtown concept at 253 Linden St.
Co-founder and CEO of Middle West Spirits Ryan Lang said in a press release that “Old Elk has built a respected and beloved brand… we’re joining forces to preserve what makes each brand special while unlocking new potential.”
Old Elk announced the change in an Instagram post, stating that its tasting room/restaurant The Reserve closed May 8. Plans for the space or what Middle West Spirits are unclear, but the brand said it is “excited to share that more news will be coming soon.”
Founded in 2013 by Curt and Nancy Richardson, Old Elk uses a unique Slow Cut proofing process. The brand’s website lists an impressive list of extensive awards it has won over the years, among them: Double Gold at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition in 2024, Double Platinum at the 2024 ASCOT Awards, and Best in Class at 2023’s Whiskies of the World Awards.
