My Father’s Mustache, an English-style pub owned by Robert Walker, is rebranding.
According to the Post and Courier, the pub posted a sign on its door saying it closed June 21 to “step aside and allow another local business to blossom.”
Walker told What Now Charleston the pub is wiping the slate clean and launching a new concept. The decision to rebrand comes after recent surges in liquor liability insurance costs.
Liquor liability insurance protects businesses that serve or sell alcohol—such as bars, restaurants and liquor stores—from financial losses if they are held legally responsible for accidents or injuries caused by intoxicated customers.
“We’re trying to implement those changes and become less of a bar and more of a restaurant because they penalize you for selling more alcohol than food,” Walker said. “It’s a completely different restaurant. It’ll be called Charlotte’s on Maybank. We got rid of a lot of the games and billiards, we’re going full-on restaurant.”
The menu will feature starters, soups and salads, as well as handhelds including classics like an american burger, chicken sandwich and fish sandwich. Entrees will include specialties such as fried catfish with gouda grits, sea bass with shrimp romesco and grilled sweet tea-brined pork chops.
“I’m excited about a lot of things,” Walker said. “We’ve got a new chef, a new manager and new staff.”
Charlotte’s on Maybank will remain at 1739 Maybank Highway on James Island and is expected to open in about two weeks. For fans of My Father’s Mustache, the original location in Mount Pleasant will stay open.
