Following the success of his bar Shelby, Tarun Kajeepeta is introducing a new cocktail spot with snacks.
It was recently reported by Eater Detroit that Kajeepeta is opening a new Filipino bar called Calamansi to be at 4458 W Vernor Highway. This new business will be owned by Shelby beverage director Tyler Olivier, partnered with his wife Marcee Sobredilla. It is set to replace PizzaPlex and will open by the end of the year.
Shelby is a cocktail bar in downtown that opened four years ago at 607 Shelby Street. It offers mixed drinks, wines, beers and snacks like nuts, olives, french onion dip and cheesecake. The menu for Calamansi has not been confirmed, but the drinks are expected to have fruit flavors. According to the article, there will be a menu of small bites that feature “Filipino flavors.”
The current cocktail bar recently posted on Instagram that food pop-ups with modern Filipino food will be happening from July 9-Aug. 2. This is showcasing chefs who are in their residencies, and it may tease some of the dishes that are set to come to the cocktail bar.
“We’re launching monthly chef pop-up residencies, kicking off with Calamansi, a modern Filipino bar and restaurant opening soon in SW Detroit!” Says the post on their Instagram.
The cocktail bar will be going right next to Vamonos! cafe, and will be near Flowers of Vietnam restaurant, The Chubby Panda and Ice Cream La Mochoacana. The exact opening date has not been announced.
What Now Detroit has reached out to the owner, and this article may be updated.
