A longstanding Italian sandwich shop in downtown Boston is gearing up for an expansion.
Figaro’s plans to open a second Boston location at 92 Peterborough St in the Fenway, taking over the former Viva Burrito space. The sign was spotted by photographer Bret Clancy via Instagram, with the shop confirming the news in a “coming soon” post featuring a photo of the vacant storefront.
The expansion adds a second Boston location for the family-run business, which currently operates its original shop in the Leather District and previously had an outpost on Revere Beach.
Founded in 2002 by siblings Rosie and Giovanni “John” Martone, Figaro’s has long been a family affair. Rosie, a Le Cordon Bleu–trained chef, brings a deep-rooted passion for Italian cuisine, while John, a Merrimack College graduate, contributes a background in finance and operations. Together, they’ve built a neighborhood staple known for its warm hospitality and hearty sandwiches.
And that reputation has reached beyond Boston. The Martone family has appeared on Food Network’s Chopped (Season 22, Episode 12, “Family Food Fight”) and was more recently featured on Phantom Gourmet, according to the eatery’s website.
At Figaro’s, the menu leans into hearty, Italian-inspired fare. Expect stacked sandwiches like The Big Steak Classic Italian, Eggplant Caprese, Tuscan Vegetable Panino, and Chicken Pesto, alongside wraps, salads, soups, and catering offerings.
Giovanni told What Now Boston that more details on Figaro’s Fenway opening will be shared in the coming weeks, so stay tuned as the expansion takes shape.
