Sacramento Donut Shop Receives Yellow Placard Following Health Inspection

Hillsdale Donuts was flagged for lack of handwashing supplies and improper hot and cold holding temperatures.

A routine health inspection was conducted at Hillsdale Donuts on May 12 by the Sacramento County Environmental Management Department. The restaurant received a yellow placard for multiple health code violations and unsanitary conditions.

The report cited violations related to unclean facility and improper storage of food items.

Where: 5745 Hillsdale Blvd, Sacramento, CA 95842, United States

Hillsdale Donuts serves donuts, pastries, and breakfast items. According to the inspection report, the violations identified are:

  • The handwashing sink in the kitchen had no soap available in the dispenser. Paper towels were not available at the handwashing sink in one of the restrooms. Employees were instructed to keep handwashing stations fully stocked at all times.
  • The restaurant was storing several food items including ham, turkey, sausage patties, and cream cheese at 54°F in a reach-in refrigerator under the flat grill. Swiss cheese was measured at 58°F on the prep counter near the grill. All the food items were discarded. The staff was advised to store all PHFs at/below 41°F or at/above 135°F.
  • The inspection report noted that the time was not tracked for whipped cream-filled donuts. The report also noted the time for whipped cream-filled maple bars had also expired. Both items were voluntarily discarded.
  • The report noted employees lacked knowledge of food safety, proper cold holding temperatures, and handwashing procedures. The restaurant must correct the violation within 24 hours.

  • No person in charge was present during the inspection. Employees of the facility did not know food safety procedures. One employee stated that she was not the person in charge. While open, the facility is required to have a person in charge. The restaurant was instructed to correct this immediately.
  • The report noted that the floor in the back walkway was unclean, and debris had built up on the floor along the walls throughout the facility. The walkway floor is required to be clean in 5 days and to remove and clean the debris within 7 days.
  • The refrigerator unit for coffee supplies, like milk, lacked a visible thermometer. The staff was instructed to provide one near the refrigerator door.
  • The report noted unapproved flooring tiles along the walls and a missing coved base throughout the kitchen. The restaurant was advised to conduct a thorough deep clean, maintain cleanliness, and ensure that no buildup is found along the walls. The facility must follow the directions and comply to fix the violation.

Following the routine inspection, the donut shop was found in unsatisfactory condition and received a yellow placard. A follow-up inspection will be conducted to verify compliance.
