Crust Simply Italian is continuing its Valley expansion with Avondale and Surprise now under consideration, according to a recent report from Phoenix Business Journal.
The Arizona-based Italian restaurant company, founded by Michael Merendino, has steadily grown its footprint over the years while maintaining a neighborhood-driven approach to hospitality. Recent growth includes the debut of its Peoria restaurant earlier this year and the upcoming Mesa opening.
Mesa represents one of the company’s most anticipated projects. The restaurant, planned for The Grid development in Downtown Mesa, has faced delays tied to construction and development challenges but is now moving forward again.
Crust has built its identity around creating local gathering places rooted in family traditions and approachable Italian dining. Merendino, a first-generation Italian raised on Long Island, drew inspiration from family meals and recipes passed down from his parents, including Sicilian and Abruzzi influences that continue shaping the menu today.
That East Coast influence remains central to the Crust experience. The restaurant serves New York-style pizza alongside classic Italian comfort dishes, fresh salads, pasta specialties, wines, local beers, and handcrafted cocktails.
Signature offerings include the Pizza Rustica, inspired by traditional family recipes, along with dishes such as Chicken Parm, Lobster Ravioli, burrata appetizers, and house-made meatballs.
Crust Simply Italian first opened in Scottsdale in 2007 and has spent more than 15 years establishing itself within Arizona’s dining scene. The brand now operates locations in Scottsdale, Chandler, Gilbert, and Peoria.
While no official timeline or addresses have been announced for future restaurants, Avondale and Surprise are among the Valley communities now under consideration as Crust continues shaping its next chapter.
