Walgreens, one of the nation’s largest retail pharmacy chains, is getting ready to open a new location in Spring Valley at 661 Sweetwater Rd.

The company’s new location is set to move into the former home of Rite Aid in the Spring Valley Center, according to documents recently submitted to the San Diego County Planning & Development Services. While an exact opening date has yet to be announced, the project signals Walgreens’ continued investment in expanding and updating its retail footprint throughout the region. The company has not shared additional details about the buildout.

Founded in 1901 by pharmacist Charles R. Walgreen Sr., Walgreens has grown from a single neighborhood drugstore in Chicago into one of the country’s largest pharmacy retailers. Today, the company operates approximately 8,000 locations across all 50 states and Puerto Rico, serving about 9 million customers and patients each day. Walgreens is celebrating its 125th anniversary this year, marking more than a century of pharmacy and retail service.

The company has continued to evolve its pharmacy services over the years through expanded healthcare offerings, digital tools, same-day delivery, and prescription fulfillment technology. Walgreens also acquired nearly 2,000 Rite Aid stores in 2017, significantly increasing its presence across the United States. The Spring Valley location represents another addition to the company’s established footprint in San Diego County.

In addition to its pharmacy services, Walgreens stores offer immunizations, health screenings, photo services, and a broad selection of everyday retail products. Many locations also feature drive-through pharmacies, making prescription pickup more convenient for customers. The company’s stores are designed to provide healthcare services alongside everyday shopping needs in one location.
