A new restaurant bringing Mexican breakfast and a community-focused gathering space is preparing to open in San Diego. Coleta Cocina plans to open at 2611 Adams Avenue in early 2027, pending permits.
What Now San Diego spoke with owners Norma and Diego Marquez, who confirmed the expected timeline.
“We want to open as soon as possible. Hopefully, we’ll be open at the beginning of the year,” Norma said, explaining that city permits are currently the main factor determining the timeline.
The name Coleta carries a personal connection for the family. It comes from the nickname of Diego’s grandmother, making the restaurant a tribute to his family’s heritage.
The couple previously operated Coleta at Market on 8th in National City, where Café Alessie also started as a small coffee kiosk. After Café Alessie moved into its own East Village storefront, the couple left the food hall and closed the original Coleta.
The Adams Avenue project gives them an opportunity to bring the concept back in a standalone location. It will also mark their first restaurant venture entirely on their own.
For the new restaurant, the couple envisions a modern Mexican-inspired design, while retaining and renovating the dedicated children’s area from the previous space.
A large patio will also play an important role in the concept, giving them room to organize community events. Norma said they hope to host activities such as flower-arranging workshops and small gatherings for local business owners, continuing the community-oriented approach they have developed through their cafés.
The neighborhood’s residential character, family-friendly atmosphere and existing local businesses were among the reasons the location appealed to them. Expansion is also a possibility, although the couple wants to see how the first location performs before making further commitments.
Norma mentioned Chula Vista, where she spent much of her childhood, as a dream location if the right opportunity arises.
Both owners were born in Tijuana and have spent their lives between Tijuana and San Diego, with family roots in Guadalajara and Sonora.
“We hope to do justice to Mexican culture and our roots, and that our people will support us,” Norma told What Now San Diego.
