After 30 years of service, a local favorite Irish pub has closed its Union Street doors. On July 28, Hennessy’s Bar served its last customers. The pub owners plan to transfer its liquor license into a new restaurant concept, Bar 23.
Boston’s Hennessy’s Bar Closes After 30 Years
A downtown nightlife staple, Hennessy’s Bar Boston was known for serving a traditional Irish pub atmosphere with a high-energy vibe. Located at 25 Union Street in Boston, the bar served the community for three decades.
The bar featured a downstairs dining room, a full bar, and a beer selection that included 20 imported brews and local options. It also hosted regular music nights featuring bands, DJs, and other live performances.
Through a social media message, the restaurant team shared the news of Hennessy’s Bar closing. The team said Hennessy’s had been a gathering place for customers throughout its 30 years of operation. It has been a go-to place for hangouts and celebrations.
“Generation after generation made Hennessy’s their place,” stated the team.
The team also thanked the community for their support and noted, “As we close this chapter, our hearts are overflowing. Thank you to every customer who pulled up a stool, every employee who made this place feel like home, and every friend who walked through our doors.”
The team did not provide a reason for the closure.
Bar 23 to Take Over Hennessy’s Liquor License
According to a Boston.com news report, the bar has filed a petition to the city’s Licensing Board to transfer its liquor license to Bar 23. The bar requires approval from the licensing board and the Alcoholic Beverages Control Commission.
According to the report, Bar 23 is expected to open next year at 11 Fan Pier Blvd. in Seaport as a smaller concept from Grill 23. The restaurant will focus on a steakhouse menu inspired by its Back Bay counterpart.
Even though one chapter of Hennessey’s Bar is closing, it plans to come back soon with a new concept in the Seaport District.
