Multiple concepts are coming to Core City.
The cafe Nuvrei MC has officially opened at 4884 W Grand River Avenue #1A. It comes from chef Marius Pop, who also plans on opening a bakery on the other side of the building around November. This will be followed by an evening pizzeria at the space to open around March next year.
Pop originally established Nuvrei in Portland in 2004, and first opened a brick-and-mortar in the city’s Pearl District. Additionally, he started a chain called Pop Pizza and has been expanding it in the city, which What Now Portland covered in December 2023. This marks his first brick-and-mortar in the Detroit area.
Looking at the Core City area, he noticed there was a strong bread and pastry culture. In the past, he has worked with Zingerman’s Bakehouse in Ann Arbor, and wanted to take his skills to Detroit city limits.
“It always felt good to me in terms of the vibe,” Pop said.
Right now at Nuvrei, he is serving both coffee and matcha drinks, and it is designed to be more grab-and-go than sit-down. For the bakery, he is incorporating pastries, and will serve options like macaroons, scones, banana bread, cookies, as well as sandwiches including a bacon-egg-and-cheese. The pizzeria menu has not yet been released.
Nuvrei MC is at the intersection of W Warren Avenue, sharing the building with Bev’s Bagels and Periodicals magazine store. This is also close to BARDA, and Vesper Books and Wine is on the other side of the intersection. The building is on the north end of Core City, which is northwest of downtown Detroit.
