An East Side favorite is coming back this year, but the timeline is unclear right now.

Detroit locals Robert Mitchell and Jalia Johnson have been revealed as the new owners of Capers Steakhouse at 14726 Gratiot Avenue. The restaurant initially closed in mid-2024, and now the new team is working to bring it back. An official reopening date has not been announced by the owners.

Caper’s has been around since 1982, opened by Janina Parrott Jacobs and her husband after they bought the former Carpet Room Lounge at the address. Since then, it became famous for their buttery steaks for those on the East side of the city.

“Our goal is to provide a welcoming and inclusive space for everyone to enjoy delicious food and drinks. We believe in using fresh, locally sourced ingredients and supporting our community here in Metro Detroit .

The menu for the new version of Capers is already posted online, and signature meats include t-bone or New York strip steaks, a filet, and a Delmonico steak, with sizes up to 22 ounces. FOr starters, options include jumbo shrimp, chicken wings, fries and onion rings. Sandwiches will also be served, along with beer and other drinks.

Capers is at the intersection of Manning Street, across from Donnie’s Rocket Used Cars. Other restaurants nearby include Peking Chinese Food, Embassy Coney Island and Detroit Blues Cafe. This is considered the far east side of the city.

What Now Detroit is waiting to hear back from the owners about the reopening. More updates on the steakhouse can be found on their Facebook page.
