Fireball Pizzeria, a mobile wood-fired pizza company, is working on a brick-and-mortar location in San Marcos at 823 W San Marcos Blvd.
The company recently submitted documents to the San Diego Department of Environmental Health and Quality to open in the current home of Pizza Union. Owner Loren Tipton tells What Now San Diego that there is no opening date yet, as the business is still waiting for health department approval, but the team hopes to open soon. The project appears to be in the final stages of development, pending the necessary approval.
Fireball Pizzeria previously operated as a mobile pop-up, making appearances at locations including Oceanside Ale Works and JS Garage. In 2022, What Now San Diego reported that the business was working toward a physical location in Oceanside.
Tipton told What Now that she began hosting pop-up events in her driveway during the COVID pandemic and continued through the summer months until last year. At that point, the city of Carlsbad issued her a cease-and-desist letter, shutting down her activities. Since then, she has been searching for a new location and has finally found a home in San Marcos.
That project was planned for Wisconsin Avenue at the site of surf retail shop JS Garage. That location ultimately did not come to fruition, as JS Garage remains open and operating there. The San Marcos project would mark Fireball Pizzeria’s first brick-and-mortar location.
Fireball Pizzeria is known for its wood-fired pizza oven and scratch-made pizzas with heavy metal-inspired names and themes. Previous offerings have included the War Pig, Metal Storm Face the Pesto, and the traditional Fireball Cheese Pizza, according to a previous report from What Now.
For now, Fireball Pizzeria is awaiting approval from the San Diego Department of Environmental Health and Quality before opening. Tipton has not announced an exact opening date, but the team hopes to open soon.
