A new neighborhood gathering spot inspired by Italian coffee culture is coming soon to South Boston.
Piccolino is preparing to debut at 236 Dorchester Street, where the new café and aperitivo bar will offer a day-to-night experience inspired by founder Emily Swaine’s time living in Italy and frequent return trips over the years.
As a Southie resident herself, Swaine said she saw an opportunity to bring something new to the neighborhood she calls home. The result is Piccolino, which translates to “the little one” in Italian and is envisioned as a welcoming place to linger over coffee in the morning and gather over drinks and small bites as the day winds down.
The concept will keep things intentionally simple with a “minimal yet thoughtful” menu. Mornings will center around pastries and traditional espresso beverages, while evening service will transition into aperitivo, the beloved Italian tradition of gathering over drinks and snacks before dinner. Guests can expect shareable, seasonal bites such as marinated olives and prosciutto e melone, alongside classic cocktails like Aperol spritzes and Negronis.
For Swaine, however, Piccolino is about more than what’s on the menu. The café is rooted in the Italian rituals of slowing down, socializing, and making time for connection.
“The heart of Piccolino is about community and connection,” Swaine told What Now Boston. “In Italy, coffee is often a break from your workday, enjoyed standing al banco (at the bar) with a side of conversation; it’s a ritual. Aperitivo is the time to gather with friends over snacks, drinks, and of course a lot of laughs.”
