Boston’s go-to destination for skiers and snowboarders has packed up its longtime home as it prepares for its next chapter.

After 12 years on Canal Street, The Ski Monster has closed its original shop and is relocating to 151 Tremont Street in downtown Boston, just steps from Boston Common. The company announced the move on Instagram, where owner George Michaelsen explained why the change was needed.

“We’ve outgrown the location,” Michaelsen shared. “So we’re building something better across town.” The Canal Street shop officially closed on April 19, 2026.

Founded in a college apartment in 2007, The Ski Monster was created to bridge the gap between traditional ski shops and online retailers. The company initially built its reputation by providing skiers and snowboarders with the kind of in-depth gear information often missing from the buying experience.

In 2014, the business expanded into an 11,000-square-foot Canal Street storefront, growing into one of New England’s premier destinations for ski and snowboard equipment, bootfitting, and tuning services.

Today, the retailer is known for its carefully curated selection of premium skis, snowboards, boots, and technical apparel—all tested and vetted by the team themselves. The shop has earned a national reputation for ski boot fitting, attracting skiers from across the globe with its meticulous attention to detail, personalized approach, and expertise in helping customers find the perfect pair of ski boots.

According to a recent report from Bret Clancy, the new Tremont Street location will continue offering those same specialized services, including expert gear guidance, custom boot fitting, and high-end ski tuning. The downtown space is also expected to provide easier parking and more convenient loading and unloading.

The Ski Monster’s new location is currently under construction, with more details and updates expected closer to launch. In the meantime, the shop’s online store remains fully operational.
