After more than a decade of providing Overton Square families with creativity and joy, a Memphis institution is preparing a new canvas. The Art Project will be relocating from its long-time home to a new space in the upcoming Stomping Grounds project this fall, reports Daily Memphian.
The Art Project founders Katherine Riederer and Anna Vergos Blair announced the concept’s relocation to 2166 Central Avenue via social media post on June 22, assuring visitors old and new that “Kids will still have all of the art, creativity and messy fun but with the addition of the amenities Stomping Grounds has to offer.”
While the Stomping Grounds space will be smaller, it will have outdoor patio access, allowing young creatives to be inspired by the joy of al fresco art.
Stomping Grounds is designed to be a family friendly space that appeals to guests of all ages, making The Art Project a natural fit. Riederer and Blair set out to create an unstructured, joyful environment for children to explore the limits of their creativity-without ruining the family home. Riederer explains: “It was glitter, paint and all the messy things that parents want kids to do but don’t want the mess in their house.”
The Art Project clients with existing memberships curious about how the move will impact their subscriptions-don’t worry, Riederer and Blair have you covered. The website explains: “Existing members will be able to roll over their membership into a membership at Stomping Grounds until their expiration date. Upon expiration, they will renew their membership through Stomping Grounds.”
Locals will still have a chance to visit The Art Project in its Overton Square home for a bit longer; the concept will be moving in October, with November projected for its Stomping Grounds debut. Blair and Riederer are looking forward to their next chapter but enjoying their last days at Overton Square-and encouraging others to join them, saying: “Please come spend the summer with us in Overton Square! We want to reminisce with you about all the fun we’ve had back here in the courtyard through the years – and continue making creative, messy memories through October!”
