Manhattan’s Lei Wine Bar has earned one of the restaurant industry’s highest honors, taking home the James Beard Foundation’s 2026 Best New Restaurant award.

The award is recognized as one of the most prestigious honors in the U.S. food industry. The recognition celebrates exceptional achievement in hospitality, dining experience, and overall execution among newly opened restaurants nationwide.

Meet Lei, the Restaurant Behind the James Beard Victory

The 2026 James Beard Foundation Restaurant and Chef Awards have been announced. This year, winning its prestigious Best New Restaurant Award is a Chinese American wine bar, Lei.

Lei opened in June 2025 on Doyers Street in Chinatown, Manhattan, by Annie Shi. Chef Patty Lee leads the kitchen and blends regional Chinese-inspired dishes with a carefully curated wine program.

Lei combines regional Chinese-inspired cuisine with a wine-focused concept in Manhattan’s Chinatown. Its small, intimate setting helps it become a part of the neighborhood rather than compete with local businesses.

Lei’s all-electric kitchen and wine-focused concept help distinguish it from many recent restaurant openings. Menu highlights at Lei include the chilled celtuce with kombu jelly, cat’s ear noodles with braised lamb, and eight-treasure pudding finished tableside. The menu showcases inventive interpretations of regional Chinese dishes.

The award recognizes hospitality, atmosphere, and overall execution. Lei’s carefully curated wine list, intimate setting, and dining experience stood as its key strengths.

What the Award Means for New York’s Dining Scene

The James Beard Awards are among the most prestigious honors in the American food and hospitality industry. The awards recognize excellence in restaurants, chef leadership, hospitality, beverages, and the broader food system. The awards are presented annually, and this year, the ceremony was held in Chicago on June 15, 2026.

Lei’s victory brings national recognition to the city’s evolving dining scene. The recognition places Lei among a notable group of James Beard Award-winning restaurants. It also reflects a growing recognition of innovative Chinese American dining concepts.

Lei’s win adds to New York City’s reputation as one of the country’s leading dining destinations. Despite growing competition from cities like Nashville, Los Angeles, and others, the city stands strong as one of the country’s most important restaurant cities.

Other James Beard Winners from New York

New York had three winners in the 2026 James Beard Restaurant and Chef Awards. The awards brought additional national recognition to New York City’s hospitality community.

This year, Hooni Kim of Meju took home the Best Chef: New York State award. He is well known as the chef behind Danji, the first Korean restaurant in America to receive a Michelin star.

Lee Campbell of Borgo won the Outstanding Professional in Beverage Service award. She is one of New York’s most respected wine experts. She has built a reputation for making wine approachable while maintaining a highly curated program.

Lei’s James Beard victory highlights New York’s continued influence on the national dining landscape.
