The Barn Door Restaurant in San Antonio is getting ready to close its final chapter. The oldest serving steakhouse on New Braunfels Avenue will offer its final meal on May 10. Known for its Western-style atmosphere and traditional mesquite-grilled steaks, the Barn Door has been a community staple.

Legendary Steakhouse, Barn Door Says Goodbye

After more than seven decades of service, The Barn Door Restaurant is set to close its doors. The longtime favorite steakhouse announced its closure on social media with an emotional message.

Founded in 1953, the steakhouse is located in the heart of the city and serves both visitors and locals alike. The restaurant was established by Bill Tassos and David J. Straus on North New Braunfels Avenue in San Antonio.

The Tassos family operated the steakhouse for decades before the original partner, David J. Straus, took over complete ownership. In 2011, Randy and Darcie Stokes purchased The Barn Door Restaurant and continued its tradition and legacy.

Over the years, the steakhouse has built a strong fan base and become a familiar gathering place. Popular items on the menu include New York cut strips, porterhouse, and chicken-fried ribeye.

In the Facebook post, the team shared, “After more than 70 years, this is not an easy message to share.” The steakhouse will serve limited offerings starting May 1, 2026.

“Beginning May 1st, we will move to a limited, reservation-only schedule. We will be open Wednesday–Saturday from 5 pm–10 pm and Sunday from 11:30 am–8 pm,” added the team.

“The restaurant will close its doors for good on Mother’s Day, May 10,” according to the announcement.

The Barn Door Restaurant has not shared any official reason for closure.

The Restaurant Emotional Farewell

In the post, the team thanked the community for its support and wrote, “You welcomed us into your traditions. You trusted us with your milestones. You filled our dining rooms with life, and you made The Barn Door what it became.”

The statement continued with an appreciation note for the restaurant staff. The restaurant described them as family and highlighted, “Memories will live on far beyond these walls. From the bottom of our hearts, we will forever be in your debt.”

As the final days approach, the restaurant encourages customers to visit and enjoy their favorite meal one last time.

The closure of the restaurant truly marks the end of an era. The Barn Door Restaurant has served the city for decades and will be remembered for its longstanding legacy in San Antonio’s dining scene.
