New details have emerged about City Tacos’ new project and seventh San Diego County location. What Now San Diego shared back in January that the Mexican restaurant had submitted a permit filing for a new location in Ocean Beach. Now City Tacos has announced official plans for OB Playground, a multi-use facility and gathering place for the beachfront neighborhood.
Founder Gerry Torres shares in a statement, “It has been a dream of mine for quite some time to create an all-ages community hub like this for one of the vibrant areas of our city – a place where people can play, enjoy, and relax.”
Born and raised in Mexico City, Torres made his home in San Diego in 1992 and celebrated becoming a US citizen last Summer. Last week marked City Tacos’ ninth anniversary operating in North Park.
OB Playground is a 10,000-square-foot recreation area featuring the award-winning City Tacos, a gated dog park, fire pit and lounge seating areas, classic oversized lawn games like Connect 4, Jenga, and cornhole, and a yet-to-be-announced coffee shop and flower shop.
The site will also offer regularly scheduled live entertainment, craft fairs, and a rotating food truck schedule. The on-site bar will highlight local craft beer, Mexican beer, plus wine and seltzers on tap.
“I love the OB community and I can’t wait to hang out and eat tacos with everyone. Extending my footprint into OB really is a testament to the great people of San Diego. Their passion for City Tacos means more City Tacos,” shares Torres. Torres has also tapped Sevahna Anderson of OB’s Voltaire Art & Makers Walk to vibe out the space with murals painted by local artists.
You can currently find City Tacos open in Encinitas, La Mesa, Pacific Beach, Sorrento Valley, North Park, and at the Ballpark. Their menu features traditional and homestyle tacos, plus vegan and vegetarian options.
OB Playground is expected to open in July 2023. For more information, visit their website and follow on Instagram for updates.
