Mastro’s Restaurants, a collection of sophisticated, classic steakhouse and ocean club seafood locations, is preparing to debut in San Diego later this year.
The company, founded by brothers and James Beard nominees Mike and Jeffrey Mastro, along with their father Dennis Mastro and business partner Scott Troilo, recently announced on its website that it will open a new location in San Diego sometime in 2025. While there has been no mention of where the restaurant will land, many theories are circulating in local community blogs. This announcement proves impressive for the Mastro family, considering the company recently announced plans to open a location in Irvine later this year.
Customers can expect a high-end menu with 28-day wet-aged USDA Prime steaks, including ribeye, filet mignon, and New York strip, all cooked in a 1,500-degree broiler and served on 450-degree plates. The menu includes fresh seafood, signature appetizers, and delicious sides, complemented by an extensive wine list and live entertainment. Guests are expected to adhere to an upscale dress code, with business casual or formal attire recommended for an elegant dining experience.
Mastro’s Restaurants, founded in 1999 by Dennis Mastro and his family, opened its first Steakhouse in Scottsdale, Arizona. Known for its high-end steaks and luxurious dining, Mastro’s expanded to cities like Beverly Hills and New York. After selling the chain to Landry’s in 2013, the family launched Steak 48, a modern take on the classic steakhouse, and Ocean 44, its seafood-focused sister concept. In October 2023, they opened a new Steak 48 at the Del Mar Highlands Town Center. The family also recently took over ownership of Durant’s Steakhouse in Phoenix.
Jeff Mastro and his father and brother sold Mastro’s in 2007. At that time, they also sold Ocean Club. They sat out their noncompete, and several years later, under a new umbrella called Prime Steak Concepts, they opened Dominick’s Steakhouse in Scottsdale. A few years later after that, they opened Steak 44 in Phoenix. Then they started branching out, opening Steak 48 in several other cities nationwide, including Del Mar, a few years ago. They also opened Ocean 44 here in the Scottsdale area and then opened Ocean 48 in Newport Beach. Landry’s, Inc. now owns Mastros Restaurants.
Note: A previous version of the article stated that Mike and Jeffrey Mastro, along with their father, Dennis Mastro, owned the restaurant when the family sold it in 2007.
