Nana Fran’s, a new neighborhood restaurant from the owners of Mabel’s Gone Fishing and Bodega Rosette, is getting ready to open in San Diego’s North Park neighborhood at 3750 30th Street.
The new restaurant is set to move into the former home of Pâtisserie Mélanie, which closed earlier this year after operating for less than two years, according to SanDiegoVille. Owners Chelsea Marlene Coleman and Rae Ellen Gurne have applied for a pending Type 41 on-sale beer and wine license for the approximately 3,000-square-foot space. While an exact opening date has yet to be announced, customers can expect a scratch-made menu inspired by family recipes and a welcoming neighborhood atmosphere.
Nana Fran’s will open on the same block as Mabel’s Gone Fishing, with one storefront separating the two businesses. Coleman and Gurne have steadily expanded their hospitality portfolio over the past several years, beginning with The Rose Wine Bar in South Park in 2010, followed by Bodega Rosette and, most recently, Mabel’s Gone Fishing in late 2022. Mabel’s Gone Fishing has since earned a Michelin Bib Gourmand designation and was also recognized on Esquire’s list of America’s Best New Restaurants.
In addition to their restaurants, Coleman and Gurne operate Secret Sister Bakery, which produces pastries, breads, cakes, sandwiches, quiche, salads, and other baked goods. Many of those baking techniques are expected to carry over to Nana Fran’s, including the use of the team’s more than 150-year-old sourdough starter named Keiffer. The new restaurant continues the owners’ focus on preparing food from scratch.
This will be an excellent landing space for Nana Fran’s, considering its location in the heart of North Park and its close proximity to Mabel’s Gone Fishing. The neighborhood’s established dining scene and steady foot traffic make it a natural fit for another of the team’s concepts.
