One of the city’s most successful Thai restaurateurs is currently getting ready to debut a brand new concept in the West Village.
Fish Cheeks is currently known as one of New York’s most celebrated new Thai restaurants. The restaurant was established by owners Jenn Saesue, Ohm Suansilphong, Chat Suansilphong, and Pranwalai Kittirattanawiwat in 2016 and set itself apart for taking a modern approach to traditional Thai dishes. Eschewing the traditional New York Thai staples like Pad Thai, Jenn and her team endeavored to expose the city to a series of authentic Thai dishes that she found difficult to find in America. Fish Cheeks earned mass critical acclaim for highlighting rarer dishes like grilled pork cheeks, Isan style grilled chicken, and Lobster Plaa, and now the team is getting ready to expand with a brand new restaurant.
What Now New York previously covered Fish Cheek’s acquisition of their next-door space, greatly expanding their interior in order to accommodate their explosive popularity. Now though, Jenn and the Fish Cheeks team have acquired the lease for a brand new space at 641 Hudson Street, where they intend to debut their first new concept since launching Fish Cheeks in 2016. Their new concept, which will be called Bangkok Supper Club, is described as an “upscale, authentic Thai restaurant with small, shareable plates, in true Thai fashion,” and is expected to feature an “earthly yet elevated atmosphere” that will be both “welcoming and sophisticated.”
The space at 641 Hudson was previously home to Gunter Seeger’s eponymous Michelin-starred restaurant, which operated from December 2014 to April 2020, closing down during the peak of the Covid-19 pandemic. The location offers a total of 2,150 square feet of space on the ground floor, and 1,500 square feet of space in the basement. The restaurant is expected to be able to seat a total of 69 guests inside at one time.
Back in August we reported that the space was scheduled to host a new French restaurant called Mes Amis, but those plans fell through in September when Mes Amis was denied a liquor license by the SLA. Bangkok Supper Club, however, is expected to have much more support from the community, as Fish Cheeks has been operating successfully without complaint since they first opened. Additionally, while locals expressed significant concern that Mes Amis was planning on operating until 4:00 AM, those neighbors will be much more amenable to Jenn’s proposed daily operating hours of 12:00 PM – 12:00 AM. Jenn are team are now getting ready to meet with the board to propose their new operation and can’t share any more information until they’ve received the necessary approval to move forward.
