Two San Francisco Restaurants Cited After Health Department Inspections Flag Multiple Issues

Ono Hawaiian BBQ was cited for a cockroach infestation, and Simmer & Steamer was cited for insufficient hot water in the facility.

The San Francisco Department of Public Health conducted inspections at multiple restaurants on July 15, 2026. According to inspection reports, Ono Hawaiian BBQ and Simmer & Steamer were cited for violations, with the health department temporarily suspending their permits.

Ono Hawaiian BBQ was flagged for a cockroach infestation and unsanitary issues. Meanwhile, the Simmer & Steamer inspection report noted issues including insufficient hot water and rodent droppings.

Where: 1501 Sloat Blvd Ste A, San Francisco, CA 94132, United States

Ono Hawaiian BBQ is a Hawaiian-style restaurant. According to the inspection report, the violations included the following:

  • The report found live cockroaches in multiple areas of the facility, including under the cold top next to the handwashing sink and around the mop sink/water heater.
  • The staff was instructed to remove all dead cockroaches and evidence of cockroach activity and thoroughly clean and sanitize all the affected areas.
  • The report advised the restaurant to seal gaps and crevices without using spray foam.
  • The report instructed employees to protect all food items by storing them in covered containers with airtight lids.
  • An employee wiped their hands on an unclean towel after washing them without using soap.

  • The report found breaded raw chicken stored in a cold-top unit at 53°F near the handwashing sink. The chicken was discarded voluntarily during the inspection. The report also found that the walk-in refrigerator was holding approximately 50°F, and multiple items were measured at 55°F.
  • The staff was instructed to discard all items that were above 41°F for more than 4 hours.
  • The staff was advised to deep clean the walls, floors, and equipment, including between the equipment throughout the cook’s line in the kitchen and under the cold tops.
  • At the beginning of the inspection, the restaurant did not have any sanitizing solution available in the kitchen. Employees were advised to prepare the sanitizing solution to 100 ppm chlorine bleach immediately.
  • The report noted that an employee wiped down the food preparation area with an unclean towel and had residues on it. The employee did not use measurable sanitizer. The employee was informed about the violation and was educated on corrective action.

Follow-Up Inspection

The restaurant was required to work with a licensed pest control operator to address the cockroach infestation. The report instructed the restaurant to provide a pest control service report for cockroaches dated on or after July 15, 2026.

Additionally, the restaurant must provide proof of service for the walk-in refrigeration unit, ensuring it maintains a temperature of 41°F or below.

Due to the cockroach infestation and other violations, inspectors temporarily suspended the restaurant’s health permit and issued a closure notice. The restaurant can request a reinspection within 15 days after correcting all the violations.

Simmer & Steamer

Where: 222 Battery St, San Francisco, CA 94111, United States

Simmer & Steamer is a Korean restaurant chain specializing in rice bowls. The inspection report cited several violations, including:

  • According to the inspection report, the restaurant stored a whisk in the handwashing sink at the front customer service area. The report instructed the restaurant to discontinue this practice and advised them to ensure that all handwashing sinks remain unobstructed to allow proper handwashing.
  • The report noted that the facility lacked hot running water. The water temperature was measured at 73°F, which was the maximum temperature.
  • The PIC stated that the water heater was inoperable. The restaurant’s health permit was temporarily suspended because the lack of hot water was considered an imminent health hazard.

  • The inspection report also noted rodent droppings in the cabinet under the unused soda machine. The staff was instructed to clean and sanitize the affected areas.
  • The restaurant was recommended to work with a licensed pest control operator to eliminate vermin from the facility.
  • The report found a household insect spray in the handwashing sink in the back preparation area. The restaurant was advised to discontinue the practice.

Following the inspection, the health permit of the restaurant was temporarily suspended, and it was ordered to close immediately. The restaurant is required to correct all the violations before requesting a reinspection.

The restaurant can request a follow-up inspection within 15 days.
