A new Burlington store is headed to the northwest suburbs of Boston.
The off-price retailer is preparing to open at 630 Fellsway in Medford‘s Fellsway Plaza, according to a recent report from The Connecticut Scoop. The new store will take over the 22,478-square-foot space previously occupied by Lowe’s Outlet.
Formerly known as Burlington Coat Factory, the retailer has grown far beyond its outerwear roots. Since rebranding as Burlington in 2014, the chain has expanded its selection to include discounted brand-name women’s apparel, menswear, baby and youth apparel, beauty products, footwear, accessories, home goods, toys, and gifts.
Unlike traditional department stores, Burlington follows an off-price retail model, purchasing closeout merchandise and excess inventory from national brands and designers. That approach allows the company to offer customers brand-name products at prices typically up to 60% below traditional retail.
Founded in 1972 in Burlington, New Jersey, the company has grown from a single store in a former factory building into one of the nation’s largest off-price retailers. Today, Burlington operates more than 1,200 locations across 46 states, Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico, making it the third-largest off-price department store chain in the U.S., behind TJX Companies and Ross Stores.
An official opening timeline for the upcoming Medford location has not yet been announced. What Now Boston has reached out to Burlington representatives for additional details and will share updates as more information becomes available.
