The Chicago-based ice cream purveyor, The Original Rainbow Cone, is preparing to open a new location in Orland Park at 15711 Harlem Ave.

The company’s third standalone location will move into the former home of Bakers Square Restaurant & Bakery in late May 2023, according to a press release. The family-owned company opened its first location on Western Avenue in Chicago in 1926 before expanding throughout Chicagoland and beyond, including another standalone site at 498 East Roosevelt Road. Often sharing a roof with Buona Beef, The Original Rainbow Cone can be found in the Nashville area; Valparaiso, Indiana; and southeast Wisconsin.

“The passion for Rainbow Cone’s flavors, history, and legacy has carried its tradition for nearly a century at our original southside Chicago location,” Lynn Sapp, third-generation owner of The Original Rainbow Cone, said in a press release. “For our Rainbow Cone family to see this continue to new communities, and Grandpa Joe’s continued success, is an incredible joy. He would have been elated.”

Rainbow Cone was founded in 1926 by “Grandpa Joe” Sapp. He wanted to create a concept beyond the limited flavors allowed on a single cone, so he stacked five different flavors on top of each other. The brand has since expanded to kiosks and trucks throughout the Chicago area and launched its new franchise partner program in 2022 with franchise locations in Florida, Nashville, and other regions. The company plans to host a grand opening event at the new Orland Park Rainbow Cone.
