A new hot dog spot is set to open near Western Michigan University.

Kalamazoo local Mike “Tonto” Alexander is getting ready to debut his new coney island concept Tonto’s Coney World this summer at 3621 Stadium Drive. Alexander also said his landlord is looking for an additional location. Right now, the opening date is looking like Aug. 5 or later.

Alexander has been planning this concept for a while as he has a deep love for Detroit coney dogs and the signature chili sauce that comes with them. He thought since coney dogs are so popular in Southeast Michigan, why not bring it to an area of Kalamazoo?

“We expect it to be extremely successful,” Alexander said.

For promotion, the team is letting the public know about their concept in a different way. Instead of teasing the project on social media, Alexander is handing out printed business cards that allow future customers to get one free coney dog. The cards say “Be my guest, one free coney dog. Present my card.”

From menu photos, those dining in or taking out have the options to get multiple kinds of dogs, including the Tonto’s Coney Dog with mustard, onion and chili. “Mike’s Big Bowl of Chili” with chili beans, cheese and onions is also available. Coney dogs can be ordered with chips and soft drinks.

The coney shop will open on the south side of Stadium Drive, next to Auto Value Kalamazoo. This is near Dani’s Kitchen and Pancake House and Sweetwater’s Donut Mill. It is under construction on the southwest side of Kalamazoo.

The website for Tonto’s Coney World will be going up in the next few days, and Alexander will be releasing more information as it gets closer to the opening date.
