Kura Sushi, a Japanese revolving sushi restaurant chain, is getting ready to open a new location in Carlsbad at 5970 Avenida Encinas.

The company’s new location is set to move into the former home of Toast Gastrobrunch, according to documents recently submitted to the San Diego Department of Environmental Health and Quality. While an exact opening date has yet to be announced, the Carlsbad restaurant will add to Kura Sushi’s growing California presence. The company currently operates 27 locations across the state, with additional restaurants planned.

Kura Sushi USA was established in 2008 as a subsidiary of Japan-based Kura Sushi, Inc., which first introduced the revolving sushi concept in 1977. Today, the company has more than 550 locations across Japan, Taiwan, and the United States. The brand combines technology with traditional Japanese dining through its conveyor belt service, touchscreen ordering system, and plate tracking technology designed to keep food fresh.

The Carlsbad restaurant will join Kura Sushi’s existing San Diego County locations on Convoy Street and in Mission Valley, expanding the company’s footprint in the region. The brand continues to grow across the country, with 94 U.S. locations currently operating and 13 more listed as coming soon on its website.

The menu features a wide selection of sushi, including salmon, tuna, yellowtail, eel, scallops, and American Wagyu, along with specialty rolls, hand rolls, and seasonal offerings. Customers can also choose from side dishes, noodle bowls, desserts, and rotating limited-time menu items. The company says its menu is prepared without artificial sweeteners, seasonings, preservatives, or colorings.

This will be an excellent landing space for Kura Sushi, considering the site’s location along Avenida Encinas and its proximity to surrounding retail, businesses, and residential neighborhoods. Once open, the restaurant will give North County customers another option for the brand’s interactive dining experience and expanding menu of Japanese favorites.
