El Veganito will close after six years in business. The vegan Mexican restaurant inside Grossmont Center will close on August 26. The owner announced the closure in a video message shared on social media.
El Veganito Announces Grossmont Center Closure
The all-vegan Mexican restaurant inside the food court of the Grossmont Center confirms its closure. Owner Victor Gamboa founded El Veganito with the goal of offering traditional Mexican dishes made with plant-based ingredients.
In an Instagram post, the owner announced that the restaurant has been asked to move its operations from the building before August 2026. The Grossmont Center location was El Veganito’s first restaurant location.
Gamboa said in the video message, “This was unexpected, and honestly, we don’t know yet what comes next.” In the video message to the community, he expressed concerns for the restaurant and its future.
Gamboa said the team is actively searching for a new location to continue operating.
“We’re also searching for a new home. If you know of a small space, kitchen, food counter, or opportunity that might be right for El Veganito, please DM us,” stated the message.

Restaurant to Close Amid Redevelopment Plans
Grossmont Center, an outdoor shopping center in La Mesa near San Diego, is undergoing a multi-phase redevelopment plan. The ongoing revitalization plans have led to the sudden closure decision of El Veganito.
Apart from the restaurant, several other businesses, like Reading Cinemas, have also closed their doors due to the redevelopment plans. The space will welcome a new theatre, AMC Theatres, in the same location in 2027.
For the last weeks of operations, the restaurant has announced a new schedule. “We’ll be OPENING MONDAYS and would love to see you and feel your support during these last weeks at Grossmont,” said the owner.
The owner thanked the community and encouraged them to visit before the restaurant’s final day, August 26. Even though the restaurant is saying goodbye to Grossmont Center, El Veganito plans to return soon with a new San Diego location.
