Memphis diners are getting closer to seeing their Sonic dreams come true. The beloved franchise has filed a new construction permit for a planned Poplar Avenue location, reports Daily Memphian.
Sonic aims to take over the space at 5541 Poplar Avenue previously occupied by a Wendy’s. According to the commercial new construction permit under review with the Memphis and Shelby County Division of Planning and Development as of June 10, the restaurant will span 2,194 square feet and have an occupant load of 9.
Sonic will be getting a brand new building; the application describes the project as “new construction for a ground up Sonic drive thru location on a vacant lot”.
Sonic has been a powerful presence on fast-casual dining since it entered the scene in 1953. The restaurant, distinguished in particular for its nostalgic use of carhops on rollerskates to deliver meals, currently has over 3,000 locations open and operational.
