A popular Jamaican restaurant in Chicago, Ja’ Grill, announced the permanent closure of its Hyde Park location. The restaurant will serve its last meal next week and will mark the end of its 19 years of service.
Ja’ Grill Set to Close Its Hyde Park Restaurant
Located in the vibrant Harper Court neighborhood, Ja’ Grill Hyde Park is an upscale yet laid-back Jamaican restaurant. It offers a cozy dining experience, a relaxed lounge, and a comfort food menu.
In an Instagram post, the restaurant’s management announced the closure and thanked customers for their support. They stated that Ja’ Grill Hyde Park, located at 1510 E Harper Ct, Chicago, will shut down on Monday, November 2.
The team also thanked the University of Chicago, Harper Court, and the Hyde Park community. ‘While this chapter is coming to an end, the memories, relationships, and community we’ve built will remain with us forever,’ the post said.
The restaurant will remain open during its regular business hours until its final day of service.

Reason Behind the Closure
Owned by Tony Coates, the restaurant began its journey in 2007, according to the Hoodline report. The original location of the restaurant was on West Armitage Avenue in Lincoln Park, which closed after seven years of operation in 2014. The Hyde Park location opened in 2014 as part of the Harper Court development.
Following the success of the Hyde Park location, the restaurant also opened a second location in the Ogden Commons development in Chicago’s North Lawndale neighborhood in 2022. The second restaurant location permanently closed its doors after seven months of operations, as per the Eater report.
Reflecting on its journey, the team wrote, “From our beginnings in Lincoln Park to our home in Hyde Park, these past 19 years have been filled with unforgettable memories, meaningful connections, and an overwhelming amount of love and support.”
Hoodline reported that Coates had cited rising labor and food costs as ongoing pressures, even as the restaurant maintained steady business.
Customers can visit Ja’ Grill during its regular hours before its November 2 closing.
