A sweets business that gives opportunities for autistic adults is debuting a brick-and-mortar in the city.

Unique Sweets, which currently serves baked goods at pop-ups around the city, is moving into a permanent space sometime this year. President and founder of Unique Sweets Liza Pereira Curiel told What Now Chicago she and the team are still looking for a storefront, which will likely be in the Belmont corridor on the North Side.

Unique Sweets currently offers catering, with pick-up options available for their products. These include cupcakes, cookies, brownies and whoopie pies. For the new location, the team is leaning into more cafe items.

“This cafe is something that’s a project by a group of parents,” Curiel said.

As it is Autism Awareness Month, Unique Sweets is putting each purchase toward their new location which will help autistic adults with developing transferable skills and engaging with other coworkers. Sweets for ordering come in sizes ranging from seven to 34 treats. The company currently offers peer-led cooking classes and social events.

A menu has not been established as it is early in the planning process, but coffees and teas will be the main drinks. Food options include light sandwiches and pastries. Many of the pastries followers of Unique Sweets have come to expect will also be served..

The news came from the description on their Instagram page, which can be found here. Once a lease is signed for the new space, the team will be releasing updates on the opening date on social media.
