The restaurant chain was founded by Bill Ihlenfeldt in 1948. The Daly restaurant began as a drive-in on Jim Daly Road, called Bill’s Drive-In. It was later rebranded as Daly Drive-In.

Over the years, the restaurant expanded into 19 locations. The Plymouth Road location in Livonia was opened in 1959 by Bud and Doris Grace. It is currently the last remaining restaurant location and is owned and operated by the company.

Following its closure announcement, customers shared their disappointment on social media. One of the fans wrote a heartfelt message, “I’ve been going to Daly’s since I could drive in high school. I’m 81 and shocked. I better get a Daly’s footlong coney with onions and a large chocolate Coke.”

With the closure of Daly Restaurant’s outpost in Livonia, the Detroit dining landscape is losing a gem.
