An immersive splatter room for all ages is bringing colorful, hands-on fun to Myrtle Beach this summer.

Color Riot, owned by Janet Donnelly, will open at 9628 N. Kings Hwy. in Galleria Shopping Mall.

“This is really the ideal place in my eyes because to be between North Myrtle Beach, which is more known as the family-friendly side, and then downtown Myrtle Beach, which is really much more college energy, younger spirit, is a great opportunity for all kinds of people,” Donnelly told What Now Charleston.

Whether for a date night or a group outing, Color Riot offers four distinct room options. Guests are encouraged to reserve rooms online, though walk-ins are also welcome.

“Each of the rooms looks similar inside, but some are painted black, some are painted a lighter color, a little more airy. Other rooms are smaller and intentionally made for an intimate experience, while other rooms can hold up to 12 to 15 people, so it can be a huge experience,” she said.

After reserving the room best suited for their party, guests will choose the type of canvas to paint on, whether an actual canvas board, T-shirt or tote bag. They will then select a color palette featuring basic rainbow hues, metallics or fluorescent paints that glow under black light.

Room reservations are based on a 30-to 40-minute experience, from the time guests arrive and suit up until they exit the room.

“Usually, an experience is about 25 minutes in the room. Some people might only be there for 10 minutes; others might take their full time and really have a good time. You’ll be able to put in your own music through our Bluetooth speakers, and you have the choice of having the disco ball on or off, so the experience is what you make of it,” Donnelly said.

She continued, “Every single time you come in, it’s going to be completely different from the last time because it’s how you throw the paint. It’s constantly moving and fluid. It’s just a lot of fun.”

In addition to the splatter rooms, Color Riot will offer pour painting, spin art and pendulum art, along with monthly and seasonal ceramic specials.

“It will be called ‘Pour Decisions.’ You come in and get a flat canvas, and you get the ceramic piece, and you pour the paint on top of it. So when you’re done, you get two pieces in one—the ceramic piece that’s completely covered in paint and then the artwork from the canvas on the bottom,” she said.

Donnelly looks forward to introducing a new concept to the Myrtle Beach community and its visitors.

“When I designed this, I really put myself as the customer, so I’m hoping that when people come in, they have the same excitement that I do,” she said.

The goal is to soft-open Color Riot in early August, followed by a grand opening over Labor Day weekend.
