The owner of a Mexican and vegan cafe is moving into the city for her next project.

La Nieta is a new vegan cafe and market planned for 2140 W North Avenue in Wicker Park. It comes from local Casandra Flores, the owner of the vegan spot Abuelita Coco in Oak Lawn. Flores anticipates the opening is about a month out, and she will be announcing an official date around Aug. 4.

“Been planning to open a second restaurant about a year and two months,” Flores told What Now Chicago. She added she favors the West Town/Wicker Park area.

At Abuelita Coco, 4821 W 95th Street, Flores has a large menu of breakfast burritos featuring tofu, vegan sandwiches and enchiladas. Teas, smoothies and even tequila shots are drink options, along with the coffees. The business uses only avocado oil and sea salt for the tacos and burritos.

Flores’ new cafe will again serve a wide variety of sandwiches, baked goods and tacos. She plans on offering cold-pressed juices to keep with the vegan options. Seafood dishes like fish tacos and calamari are also being explored.

The new La Nieta cafe is coming to the north side of W North Avenue near Wicker Park’s center. The business will share space at the building with Youma’s Kitchen and Beanokio Cafe. It is a short walk from the Damen CTA Blue Line stop.

Flores will be releasing more updates for the opening date on the Abuelita Coco Facebook page in the coming weeks.
