A beloved Asian fusion restaurant in Royal Oak said goodbye to the community after nearly 10 years of service. Edo Ramen shared the permanent closure notice after being temporarily closed for several weeks. The restaurant team cited lease and repair issues as the main reasons for the closure.
Edo Ramen Closed Its Royal Oak Location Permanently
Royal Oak’s acclaimed ramen restaurant was well-known for its lively atmosphere and extensive menu. It served traditional and flavorful Filipino cuisine and Japanese noodles, along with other popular Asian dishes. It also offered a vegan, gluten-free, and vegetarian menu.
Edo Ramen (Edo Lounge) also featured a gallery and a patio to host art shows and weekend events. The restaurant was named the ‘Best Japanese Restaurant’ by the Detroit Metro Times magazine in 2023, 2022, and 2020.
On September 17, the restaurant team shared the heartbreaking news of its permanent closure. The closure news was followed by weeks of temporary shutdown due to a summer power outage and a broken AC system.
In the permanent closure announcement, the team wrote, “We have decided to close permanently. This is especially sad because we were approaching our 10-year anniversary.”
The team thanked the community and customers for their support over the years. “Thank you all again for 10 years of your patronage, loyalty, and support,” said the restaurant. “Hopefully one day we can return in another space.”
Edo Ramen announced its temporary closure a few weeks ago with a social media post. The team stated, “We are closed until further notice due to a power outage. We are sorry for the inconvenience.”
What Led to the Closure
The team explained, “We were approaching the end of our lease and met with many building fixes that are extremely costly.” They stated that the landlord and new lease issues led to the permanent closure of the restaurant.
“We felt trapped in a very unhealthy situation and toxic relationship with our landlord. Lawyers have been involved, so we cannot say much more,” added the restaurant team.
The restaurant also highlighted that the economic challenges had made the restaurant business more difficult in the last few years.
In the post, the restaurant team also encouraged the community to support local businesses, restaurants, and artists.
“A lot of restaurants are just plain struggling right now — this is a good time to share your favorite restaurant, go support your favorite artist or music act,” said the team.
With the closure of Edo Ramen, the Michigan community has lost a gem from its dining scene.
